Expired Registration in Ohio
All motor vehicles operated on the public roads and highways of Ohio must have a valid registration. The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV), a division of the Ohio Department of Public Safety, administers all statewide vehicle registration programs and procedures. The Ohio State Highway Patrol ensures compliance of legal vehicle operation on Ohio roadways.

The primary statutory provisions address registration procedures, renewal requirements, display of registration plates, and penalties for non-compliance.
Registration Terms and Expiration in Ohio
Registration Renewal System
Ohio operates an annual registration system with staggered expiration dates based on vehicle type and ownership classification. Registration expiration dates vary depending on whether the vehicle is privately owned, leased, or used for commercial purposes. Vehicle owners may renew registration up to 90 days before the expiration date without losing any time on the current registration.
Standard Vehicle Registration (Privately Owned):
For passenger vehicles, non-commercial trucks and trailers, motor homes, motorcycles, mopeds, motor scooters, and golf carts, the registration expiration date is determined by the registrant's birthdate or an alternate expiration date if qualified.
- Registration expires annually on the owner's birthdate
- Alternative: If multiple residents at the same address own vehicles, any owner's birthdate at that address may be used as the expiration date
- Example: A vehicle registered to an owner born on April 15 will expire on April 15 each year
Leased Vehicle Registration:
For leased passenger vehicles, non-commercial trucks and trailers, motor homes, motorcycles, motor scooters, and golf carts, the expiration date is determined by the name of the leasing company:
- Registration expires on the 20th day of the month assigned to the leasing company based on the first letter of the company's name
| Company Name Begins With | Expiration Month |
|---|---|
| A, B | January 20 |
| C, D | February 20 |
| E, F, G | March 20 |
| H, I, J | June 20 |
| K, L | July 20 |
| M | August 20 |
| N, O, P, Q | September 20 |
| R, T | October 20 |
| S | November 20 |
| U, V, W, X, Y, Z | December 20 |
Commercial Vehicle Registration:
For commercial trucks and trailers, the expiration date is determined by the last two digits of the federal tax ID number or Social Security number of the titled owner:
- Registration expires on the last day of the month assigned based on the tax ID or Social Security number
- For leased commercial vehicles, the expiration is based on the lessee's tax ID or Social Security number
Grace Period
Ohio does not provide a grace period for expired vehicle registration. Once registration expires on the assigned expiration date, vehicle owners may not legally operate the vehicle on public roads until registration is renewed.
Penalties for Expired Registration in Ohio
Administrative Penalties
Ohio assesses administrative penalties for late registration renewal beyond specified timeframes.
Late Registration Renewal Fee:
A $10.00 late fee is charged for certain vehicle registrations renewed more than 30 days after the expiration date. This administrative penalty applies to:
- Registration renewals completed more than 30 days past the expiration date
- All renewal methods (online, in-person at deputy registrar agencies, or by mail)
| Renewal Timing | Late Fee |
|---|---|
| Renewed on or before expiration date | $0.00 |
| Renewed 1-30 days after expiration | $0.00 |
| Renewed more than 30 days after expiration | $10.00 |
Note: While Ohio does not impose a late fee for renewals completed within 30 days after expiration, operating a vehicle with expired registration during this period remains a violation subject to traffic penalties.
Traffic Violations
Operating a motor vehicle with expired registration is a criminal violation under Ohio Revised Code § 4503.11. Law enforcement officers may issue citations to vehicle owners or operators who fail to file annual registration applications or pay required taxes.
| Offense Classification | Maximum Fine |
|---|---|
| Minor misdemeanor | $150.00 |
Operating a vehicle with expired registration is prosecuted as a minor misdemeanor in Ohio courts and results in fines and a criminal record. Unlike more serious misdemeanors, minor misdemeanors do not carry potential jail time.
