Car Registration Requirements for New Ohio Residents
Individuals relocating to Ohio with a vehicle from another state must complete the registration transfer process within a specified timeframe. Ohio law establishes registration obligations for new residents who take employment, sign a lease, purchase a home, or enroll children in school.
Timeline for New Ohio Residents
New residents must register within 30 days of establishing residency in Ohio. This deadline applies to any motor vehicle operated or driven upon public roads or highways.
Failure to register a vehicle within the required timeframe is classified as a minor misdemeanor. During the 30-day period, license plates from the vehicle's previous state may be displayed.
A $5.00 late fee applies when title application is submitted more than 30 days after the assignment date. Additionally, a $10.00 late fee is charged for certain vehicle registrations renewed more than 30 days after the due date.
Establishing Ohio Residency
Ohio Revised Code Section 4505.01 defines a resident as any person who maintains their principal residence in the state or is determined by the registrar of motor vehicles to be a permanent or temporary resident.
